Peer To Peer Basics

Overview of Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

Peer to Peer (P2P) Fundraising or Social Fundraising is a grassroots-based model that enlists a charity’s supporters to raise money on behalf of the organization. The supporters become the primary fundraisers and they reach out to their network of family, friends, co-workers and social media followers to encourage them to make a donation to their fundraising campaign on behalf of the charity. A donation given to the P2P campaign goes directly to the charity and not the fundraiser. This is what separates peer-to-peer fundraising from a crowdfunding campaign.

In simple terms, you give your supporters reason to fundraise on behalf of your cause and they encourage their personal network to give to your organization. With Peer to Peer, you are casting a wide net and allowing your fundraisers to market for you using old fashioned word of mouth.

Benefits of Peer to Peer Fundraising
  1. People are most likely to support your cause if they are encouraged to do so by a personal connection. Your cause gains instant credibility and trust when a friend or family member makes a connection to your organization.

  2. A Peer to Peer Campaign allows you to leverage a wide network of people for free through word of mouth advertising. Give them a good reason and your peer to peer campaign can go viral.

  3. Your supporters know what motivates their family and friends to act. A person that becomes a fundraiser on behalf of your organization does this because they believe in it. That kind of passion is infectious and a strong call to action from the supporter will motivate their network to act. This action could be in the form of a donation or to get involved in your campaign as well.
